Greek & Roman God of Music and Dance

About The School

Apollo is a small, friendly dance school that boasts a very high standard and a 100% exam pass rate. We have a fun, safe approach to traditional dance styles and view every dancer as unique. All teachers are fully qualified to teach dance with the IDTA and hold an Enhanced DBS check.

History

We have been teaching dance in the area for over 60 years. We were established as the Gilmour School of Dancing by Miss Carolyn in 1963. Since then the school has achieved and maintained a high standard of teaching and results.

"Our daughter has made amazing progress and has always loved her ballet lessons!"
The positive impact of Apollo Dance School on my daughter's life has been immeasurable. She has gained confidence, discipline, and a love for dance that will stay with her forever.
"I joined the adult beginners tap class, having never previously attended dance classes. The teacher was very patient and friendly, putting me at ease and making the class enjoyable."

Student Prospects

Over the years, Apollo students have successfully auditioned for and attended multiple prestigious dance academies and universities.

The Principal

Miss Rebecca Bodiam, BA (Hons), began dancing at Apollo (formerly Gilmour School of dance) at age three, studying Ballet, Tap, and Modern. She has experience in Contemporary, Jazz, Musical Theatre, and Commercial dance. After studying Ballet at university, she returned to Apollo to earn her dance teaching qualifications, achieving a fantastic 92%. Miss Rebecca took over the school in April 2024.

Qualifications & Experience

Miss Rebecca started learning ballet at Apollo when she was three years old. She loved dancing straight away and also started Tap and Modern.

In 2014, Miss Rebecca achieved second place in the IDTA’s Under 14s South East England Classical Performance Awards and in 2016 was nominated for their National Classical Performance Awards. Age 14, Miss Rebecca successfully auditioned for Swindon Dance’s Centre of Advanced Training on the contemporary program where she attended Ballet and Contemporary classes twice a week alongside her Ballet, Tap and Modern at Apollo. This program gave Miss Rebecca the opportunity to work with well known contemporary dance companies such as Jasmin Vardimon Company and Tavaziva Dance Company.

Before going to university, Miss Rebecca achieved distinctions in her Advanced One Ballet, Intermediate Tap and Intermediate Modern. Miss Rebecca went to a prestigious ballet school for her first year of university, where she had the opportunity to perform in a Scottish tour of Swan Lake. Unfortunately the school closed during Covid. For 2ndand 3rd years, Miss Rebecca attended the Brighton Academy of Performing Arts, where she had the opportunity to incorporate Musical Theatre into her Ballet training. At TBA, Miss Rebecca performed principle standard ballet solos, excerpts from ballets and two full length musicals: The AddamsFamily and Cats. In 2022 Miss Rebecca graduated with a first class degree in ballet.

Miss Rebecca returned to Apollo to take her teaching qualifications and Advanced Two Ballet, passing both with distinctions – 92% and 94% respectively.Alongside Apollo Miss Rebecca also choreographs for youth musical theatre, recently High School Musical, We Will Rock You, and Les Miserables.

The following document lays out our updated privacy notices in compliance with the new General Date Protection Regulations (GDPR) effective as of 25th May 2018.

What Personal Data We Store, Why we Store it and How it is Stored

Upon entry to the school, Miss Rebecca will take down your phone number(s), email address(es), home address(es), child’s name(s) and date of birth(s) along with any medical conditions they may have. All data is stored in documents on Miss Rebecca’s computer or the Apollo School of Dance mobile phone and not in hard copies. Any hard copies you give us are destroyed immediately after entering details into computers. Once your child has taken an exam, they are given a PIN number by our examining board: The International Dance Teachers Association (herein referred to as the IDTA) which allows them to be recognised by the institution. This PIN number along with your child’s name and date of birth is sent to us in hard copy once exam results are received. These hard copies are stored at Miss Rebecca’s home address and kept under lock and key in a filing cabinet with solo access. All information is collected for legitimate interest: it is necessary for us to extend this data to third parties as part of the business for the children to progress in their disciplines including exam and festival work.

Sharing Data

All data is only shared between Miss Rebecca and third parties who it is deemed necessary (i.e. festival organisers for those children involved in festivals, and the IDTA for exam work). All emails will be blind copied to recipients so as not to share personal email addresses and no other personal data will be shared with other parents or pupils unless we have direct consent from you, the parent, to do so for a legitimate reason. No personal data will be shared on the Facebook group: Apollo School of Dance Group (formerly the Gilmour School of Dancing Group).

All personal data will be deleted within a set time after your child’s final class at Apollo School of Dance. Please note this does not mean the date that you notify us of leaving but the last lesson your child takes part in. All personal data will be removed within three months through permanent deletion of yours and your child’s information from all documents on both computers and by blacking out their IDTA PIN, name, and date of birth on certificates received from the IDTA notifying us of examination results in hard copy. All hard copies of exam results will be permanently destroyed via shredding after five years of the date of examination session. Any photos which we may have of your child including those on the Apollo School of Dance website will be deleted five years after the date of your child’s final class. If you wish for your data and photos to be deleted sooner please email Miss Rebecca on rebecca.bodiam@gmail.com stating your child’s name and the data you wish to be deleted and every effort will be made to delete it within one week.
